Session Description:
Come gather close around the Zoom campfire as horror author Shanna Heath reveals how the secrets of this scary genre can be used by any author or artist working in any genre to craft thrilling content. She’ll explore instinctual childhood fears in relation to tension and stakes, with examples from R.L. Stine and Madeleine L’Engle. You’ll venture with her into Freud’s Uncanny, where she’ll demonstrate how to make the familiar into the unfamiliar to add impact, create dread, and transform an ordinary setting or encounter into a thrilling one. We’ll explore the Uncanny with illustration examples from Maurice Sendak and more, plus writing examples from Christopher Paul Curtis and Frances Hodgson Burnett. You’ll take part in Zoom polls, work together in small-group Breakout Rooms, and hear from children’s literature scholars and scary illustrators Shanna has interviewed. You may also suddenly feel the urge to eat Count Chocula cereal. Shanna is a member of SCBWI and the Horror Writers Association (HWA). You can find her online at www.shannaheath.com or on Instagram @mother_marrow.
