Three tracks will be available: Picture Books, Novels (chapter books – YA), and Illustration.

3. Once you’ve received news that your registration is final for the retreat, do the Quick Illustrator Homework explained below.

What to pack:
Illustrators will need to bring art supplies to the retreat with them:
Sketchpad 9 x 12 or smaller, their choice of size. Paper should withstand repeated erasing.  Bring pencils for sketching. Bring drawing pencils, watercolor kit , markers, or colored pencils if desired. For the composition workshop, gray, black, and white will be needed as we sketch sample layouts. After the color and design discussions, you may be inspired to work with color. Bring your portfolio. We’ll ask the editors to look at them during breaks.

Illustrators have opportunities for critiques throughout the weekend.  We will generate sketches during the weekend that some might want critiqued, and they can also bring art from home or pull pieces from their portfolios.

Pre-conference composition homework:
Do this before arriving at the retreat. Pick a mood. Sketch 4 thumbnails inspired by that mood. Limit yourself to using only these shapes: circle, triangle and rectangle and cube. Use as many shapes in one thumbnail as you want.  Also limit yourself to three colors: Try to create the best composition possible using only black, white and mid-grey.  Note: if you’re confused, it’s okay. Do your best, and we’ll discuss it at the retreat.

Registration and Fees: All meals and programming is included in the registration fee of $200 for members and $250 for non-members. No early bird rate will be offered. Registration opens August 3, 2016. Special rates for lodging at Boyne Highlands have been negotiated. Rates range from $119-$149/night per double occupancy room. Reservations at these rates can be made August 3-September 7.
