scbwilogo72 (2)Session Description: This live webinar was held on January 16, 2014. It was a nuts and bolts session for writers and writer/illustrators to learn how the children’s book industry works. Topics included: standards for traditional publishing (formatting, word counts for categories, conventions, what’s pushy, what’s polite), how the industry works (role of agent vs. editor, publishing houses and what they offer, large house vs. small vs. regional), and how we get paid (advance, royalties).  If you'd like to receive a recorded version, scroll to the bottom, register for the session and usually within 24 hours you will receive a link via your email address to log on and view the session. The link is good for three months after the event. Registration includes the full one hour webinar with chat, a Resources handout, and Q&A.

"Carrie and Leslie presented the information well. I was engrossed. I was lost in thought and surprised when Carrie announced we were at the end…"

headshot profile photo by WendyCarrie Pearson is the SCBWI-MI Co-Regional Advisor. She lives in Marquette on the shore of Lake Superior. Her writing career began with hidden notes to her mother in which requests for palomino ponies and trips to Disney World were frequent topics. In a former life, she wrote business plans and marketing material, grants and RFPs, brochures and sound bites. She even wrote and directed an impromptu funeral for a visiting dignitary. Now she happily lives in the world of children’s books. She’s been an SCBWI member since 2005 and has won two awards through this organization that have bolstered her courage. Her first two books are lyrically written nature nonfiction picture books published by Sylvan Dell Publishing. In addition to nonfiction, Carrie writes funny fiction picture books and middle grade historical fiction.
