Once you’ve produced a tightly written, intriguing story, it’s time to introduce it to the publishing world. During this session, we will be focus on how make your work intriguing to industry professionals.  Topics will include:

* Query letters – What is a query letter?  What is its purpose?  How to create one that will excite editors/agents and have them begging to see your work.

* Cover letters – How is this different than a query letter?  What is appropriate to include? What is not?  We will look at how to present yourself and your work professionally.

If you ask Monica about her writing projects, you’ll get a variety of answers. She may be writing an educational guide for creative writing instructors (Dot-to-Dot Stories).  She could be diving into the realm of nonfiction with critters furry, squishy, or slimy (My First Book of Animals, Tarantula, Walking Stick, Paper Wasp, Black Widow, Tick). She might even be weaving a picture book together with dead people! (Wake the Dead)   

Monica Harris is a Michigan author with 14 published books and more than 180 magazine publications.  She also has several years of experience in assessment writing for such states as Michigan, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Idaho. Learn more about Monica at her website:

Leslie Helakoski is the Co-Regional Advisor for SCBWI-MI. She is a former graphic designer and copy writer which sparked her interest in combining art and text in picture books. She is the author and sometimes illustrator of eight humorous picture books — two of which have been selected as Michigan Reads! books by the State Library of Michigan — and has been a member of SCBWI since 1997. Her books Big Chickens and Big Chickens Fly the Coop received starred reviews and Woolbur was nominated for awards in 11 different states as well as being a Book Sense Hot Pick. Her newest book, Doggone Feet! was chosen by Scholastic as a best books for math in their teachers' publication. She brings a wealth of experience and industry knowledge to our region.
