This one hour presentation including Q & A will give a broad overview on a successful, acquiring agent’s perspective to crafting a long-term career in children’s publishing across genres, including some deal-breaker missteps to avoid along the way. Mr. McCarthy will speak about market conditions, how to determine viable projects, and read between the lines on responses and rejections. He will describe how to make your work rise to the top in the face of the high volume agents deal with, discuss the importance of connections in this industry, and share ways to target your submissions to increase your possibility of success.

Sean McCarthy began his publishing career as an editorial intern at Overlook Press before moving to the Sheldon Fogelman Agency.  He worked as the submissions coordinator and permissions manager before becoming a full-time literary agent. In 2013, he founded his own literary agency. He works on children’s books for all ages, and is actively looking to build his client list. His clients include Zachariah O’Hora, Hyewon Yum, Mark Fearing, Jamie Swenson, and Judith Robbins Rose. Sean graduated from Macalester College with a degree in English-Creative Writing, and is grateful that he no longer has to spend his winters in Minnesota.

Her writing career began with hidden notes to her mother in which requests for palomino ponies and trips to Disney World were frequent topics. In a former life, she wrote business plans and marketing material, grants and RFPs, brochures and sound bites. She even wrote and directed an impromptu funeral for a visiting dignitary. Now she happily lives in the world of children’s books. She’s been an SCBWI member since 2005 and has won two awards through this organization that have bolstered her courage. Her first two books are lyrically written nature nonfiction picture books published by Arbordale Publishing (formerly Sylvan Dell). In addition to nonfiction, Carrie writes funny fiction picture books and middle grade historical fiction.
