9:00-10:00 am – Kris Remenar and her Remenar Seminar presents Decode the Common Core and Make Books Irresistible to Librarians and Teachers: Common Core Standards are all the buzz in the children’s book industry because they’ve been adopted by 44 states and publishers are paying attention. We will "translate" the language of Common Core in Reading and Writing and see how to apply the educational vocabulary to our books. Plus, free stuff!
9:00-10:00 am – Laurie Keller and Christy Ottaviano–How Editor and Author Work Together: Who gets to be right? What is worth fighting over? Real-life editorial teammates, Christy Ottaviano and Laurie Keller, examine the strong ties and weak links of the working relationship between author and editor. As a bonus, they’ll also highlight how they approach humor in books.
10:15-11:20 am – Panel: Independent and Digital Publishing with Sandy Carlson, Julie Hedlund, David Stricklen, and Lori Taylor: Four independently published Michigan authors and/or illustrators discuss the ins and outs, pitfalls, and triumphs of self-publishing and digital publishing options.
